My Philosophy of Nursing RSS

My Philosophy of Nursing

As a small child, I dreamt of being a nurse. I remember longing to grow up so I could wear the white uniforms and caps that I saw nurses wearing in my village. As years goes by, my idea of what a nurse was changed I began to understand that a nurse was not just a person in a uniform, but somebody that could make a difference in another person’s life. Nursing, to me is caring and compassion conveyed with the skill needed to offer a milieu that supports healing. This can be provided at any location and delivered by any person with the ability to show love and support to another human being.

In addition I understand that a professional nurse is unique. They (professional nurse) provides competent care along the guidelines set forth by the  Nurses and Midwifery Board that guides Their licence to practice and the environment he or she resides.

Personally, nursing is my way of giving back to society. I enjoy helping others. Giving of myself gives me peace of mind and spirit. This is a much different view than when I started in my diploma degree program several years ago. Then it was all about obtaining my new proficiency learning the ability to provide medical care and wearing the white uniform and cap. I have discovered that there is far more to healing than medication. I need the ability to truly show a person that my care involves working together with my clients as well as the family on a spiritual level (holistic care). I have found that this level of interaction offers restorative basis to uphold trust thus aiding in the healing process. Exclusive of this therapeutic setting, total healing is prevented.

My philosophy is easily carried into my professional life. One of our mission statements is to sympathetically and empathetically deliver excellence health care in a modern and competent way. Lastly to make a positive impacts in my generation and the generation to come by living a life that portrait my philosophy

In conclusion, I could rightly say, I live my philosophy of nursing on a daily basis. That explain why I am still pursuing knowledge to upgrade my skill to stay current and make a difference in people’s life

Dear Sir/ Madam

Re: Graduate nurse program

My name is Afolake Abosede Akande, a nursing graduate from University of Ballarat. As a new graduate, please accept my application to your hospital's new graduate program. I am an enthusiastic candidate with all the skills necessary to join this program and contribute to patient care at the hospital.

During my clinical placements at Epworth Richmond Hospital, Manor court aged Care Home and Williams Town Hospital, I learned a range of nursing skills on the job, while also developing the ability to think on my feet and problem-solve. I especially enjoyed my rotation on the emergency ward and hope to one day work in emergency unit as a stepping stone and also to gain more experience before  proceeding in my education to  specialise as a midwife or as a psychiatric nurse .

I work well as part of a team, communicate well, and have excellent attention to detail. I strive to offer the best customer service to patients and always ensure safe practice on the job. The deputy director of Williams Town hospital was especially impressed with my skills on my placement there and offered me a professional reference.

I received excellent grades at university, and have an excellent academic record (see transcript attached).

I'm eager to find out more about the new graduate program and the employment opportunities at your hospital. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely

I have ability to provide care for people of all ages and backgrounds, to put people at their ease, gain their confidence and deal sympathetically with their problems and fears.
  • Good communication and observation
Communication and observation are crucial to good nursing. I am good at listening as well as a good communicator and an observer which make it possible for me to gain my clients assurance, identifying when something is not right with my client and  find prompt solution
  • Ability to answer questions and offer advice
In recognising patient needs, I always put them (my patients) in the same page with me by giving them adequate information of their conditions and care, sharing my knowledge and skills with them, their families and friends and making sure their needs are recognised by the rest of the care team. Without positive nurse patient relationship, there cannot be patient and family satisfaction. And there cannot be an environment that helped out of  anxiety
  • Happy to work as part of a team
I am able to work in unity with all  multi-disciplinary team that includes doctors, physiotherapists, anaesthetists, pharmacists, dieticians and many more, also work independently but now realised that I work more effectively when working as a team.
  • Dealing with emotionally charged situations
These involve managing distress and  help patients and families come through their crises in a short possible period through dialogue and understanding
  • Creative thinker -I am a creative thinker, and to be a creative thinker do not only requires the ability to understand problem, but also to transcend logical and sequential thinking in dealing with strategic change in an open-ended and creative way and also report any problem that is beyond my scope to my in charge nurse (RN1, my superior).
  • I am empathetic sympathetic but firm. Always tell patients the truth with respect and dignity.

My personal goal is modesty, honesty and reliability.

Money has never been my goal nor big position though they are equally important, rather doing that which enriches the soul. I am happiest when I am helping others, and owe a large debt of gratitude to my God for his grace.Leaving a foot print or a good legacy for my generation and the oncoming one is my heart desire and I am stronglyworking towards it by upgrading my skills as much as I can.

Continuity of an excelent care is my watch word.

Professional Nursing Plan

I have passion for Nursing and had dedicated myself for the profession since my first admission years ago. Not just as a service to humanity also, as a source of joy and personal satisfaction. The reward of seeing the weak, sick, and the wounded restored to strength and life is a continuing encouragement for the growing love I have for the profession. As a nurse, you can have a positive impact in many ways and places. You’re vital at the bedside but just as vital in every other aspect of the healthcare arena. There are many different types of healing —physical, emotional, and spiritual. As a nurse, you can engage on each level. Nursing isn’t about where you work; it’s about who you are. Don’t be afraid to expand your horizons. But more importantly, don’t be afraid to expanding your vision of who you are as a nurse and about what nurses do. You owe it to yourself and to your profession. Being a nurse is like no other career in the world. The dynamics of the job are endless, as well as the trials and the rewards. You really do care about the people you serve, and their families deeply. That’s part of what being an R.N. is about – selfless caring. Yes, nursing is a career, but it is also a passion. My hat goes off to my fellow nurses with great pride – for they are unsung (uncelebrated) heroes every single day of their lives. My continuous plan includes, successful completion of my degree in Ballarat University, in service and continuing education, completion of selected clinical experiences such as midwifery or psychiatric course and, independent practice of skills like, reading or writing of articles and other types of publications to fill gaps in knowledge. Lastly, to show evidence by providing a record of continued learning and development for review by others. This will consists of a list of materials to be collected for the portfolio that provide evidence of the learning activities completed.
