My Philosophy of Nursing

I believe that Nursing is an ever-evolving profession where new challenges present themselves everyday. It is my strongest opinion that without nurses, the medical profession and fields would not be what they are today. While doctors are without question important. I believe that nurses have helped to pave crucial pathways in the way we look and think about caring medically, physically and emotionally about individuals from various cultures, socio-economic backgrounds, race, religions, beliefs, genders, sexualities, age and more.

Cover Letter

To Whom it May concern,

I am currently midway through completing a Bachelor of Nursing at The University of Ballarat. It is my second year of studying Nursing, and I am eager and motivated to learn all I can about becoming one. Not only am I driven to succeed in this profession, but I believe that I have found a career in which I can excel and constantly learn from it.

Throughout my professional experiences I believe I have accumulated many skills that will help for my future in this career. I have worked previously in a hospital setting from the 9th of June 2009 until 2nd of February 2010 as a perioperative orderly, and I believe through this experience I picked up the necessary skills that can help me move quickly and with ease around an environment that is constantly changing and busy, such as one that is a hospital.

I also participated in an active placement within and Acute/Elderly Aged Care Centre last year from the 30th of August 2010 until the 17th of September 2010. As well as being a fast and hands on learner, I developed and used communication skills that are incredibly valuable for future use. I developed confidence, grew upon my ability to work in a fast-paced environment. I enhanced my motivation to learn and succeed and have developed the skills to be able to easily build a good rapport with patients/clients and staff members. During this time, I believe I proved myself more than capable of pursuing successfully, a career as a nurse in the future.

I hope to one day work within and ICU or Psychiatric Nursing setting as I believe these to be challenging and rewarding settings to work within. However, I am constantly within an open and willing mind to try anything that may come my way.

I am proud to say that in the future, I will be a part of a profession that is not only essential, but also to be a part of a worldwide team that works collectively together to help those in need. I believe that one day I will be able to provide back what I have learned, to those in need in a way which reflects positively that I am honest and ready to provide care to those who need it.

I am devoted to being the best nurse I can be. I hope that I have shown you that I am committed to building and actively changing this profession for the better.

Yours Sincerely,

Dylan Collis

Professional Experiences

From June 9th 2009 -  February 2nd 2010 I worked as a Perioperative Orderly at the Hobart Private Hospital:

This job including me working in areas such as CSSD, Theatre, and Recovery. I help maintain the general medical supply stocks in storerooms around the Theatres. I assisted in prepping patients for operations as well as help to set up theatres before the various operations. I also assisted in cleaning and sterilising of the theatres after operations, as well as collecting, washing, sterilising and setting medical trays up for future operations.

From September 30th -  October 17th 2010, I also took part in Clinical Placement at the Hepburn Creswick Aged-care/Acute Hospital.

This placement was my first real experience on the Nursing side of a hospital/care-facility. There aren't enough words that could describe the immense amount of appreciation, and knowledge I gained from the 3 weeks I spent helping to care for patients within an acute and aged-care setting. I was able to practice aseptic technique, therapeutic communication, observations, BSL (Blood Sugar Levels) and more. I learnt many things while on this placement, the most valuable thing to me though was the reassurance that Nursing was a career I was prepared to do anything to be a part of.

From the 7th of February 2011 to present I have been working as a Residential Advisor for the University of Ballarat's Accommodation and Hospitality services. This job sees me taking on a pastoral role as a role model and carer for approximately 20 students who live on residence at the university. I deal with everyday issues to extreme emotionally and physically trying problems. Through training of becoming a Residential Advisor I am qualified in first aid, mediation and how to deal and refer students with bigger emotional problems to counsellors and more.
