My Philosophy of Nursing

Nursing is a multidimensional profession. It has the scientific, medical, physical and human aspects. The true practice of nursing, therefore, is one that is not confined to just physical treatment. It is rather holistic such that the delivery of physical care is coupled with respect, compassion and social and cultural sensitivity.

As a nursing professional, I believe that these are values that should not only be directed towards patients, but also towards co-workers and other people in and around the workplace.  The quality of patients’ experience in nursing care depends on whether these values are observed by the nursing professionals. These values are not something that can be learned within the four walls of the academic institutions. Rather, they have to manifest naturally within a person or acquired through better appreciation of the physical, economic, social and cultural background of each patient.

The practice of quality nursing therefore requires not only medical or scientific knowledge but also personal commitment to people and taking interest in the various facets of their lives.

Reflection And Self Assesesment

The practice of nursing is a holistic approach – one that involves the delivery of physical care coupled with respect, compassion and social and cultural sensitivity. To become a truly successful nurse, one has to manifest these values and have the required scientific / medical knowledge.  Looking back, I can say that I have made a strong start toward at becoming a successful nurse. I’ve completed a nursing degree in the Philippines and is about to complete the bridging course for nurses in Australia. I have gained a considerable understanding of the different cultures that make up the Australian society through communicating with different people at the university and at work. I believe I am ready for the responsibilities vested upon nurses in Australia although there are some aspects I know I can still improve on. I foresee threats and challenges ahead but I am confident of overcoming them knowing that my greatest strength is the commitment to learning and the interest in people and the various facets of their lives.

Nurses Team

A decentralized system in which the care of a patient is distributed among the members of a group working in coordinated effort. The charge nurse delegates authority to a team leader who must be a professional nurse. This nurse leads the team-usually of 4 to 6 members-in the care of between 15 and 25 patients. The team leader assigns tasks, schedules care, and instructs team members in details of care. A conference is held at the beginning and end of each shift to allow team members to exchange information and the team leader to make changes in the nursing care plan for any patient.
