My Philosophy of Nursing

"3C's: Commitment, Competence, Compassion"

My personal view of nursing is centred on these three basic philosophies. Sincerely committing oneself to the profession would ensure that in every problem that one faces, it is expected that one will carry out the best possible decision for the benefit of both the client and oneself. Striving to be a competent nurse is essential in keeping safety and quality of care rendered to each individual, as well as updating one's skills and knowledge to the ever-changing standards of the profession. Finally, nursing would not be the career that it is without compassion for the people that one serves, being empathic and a good listener when the situation calls for it, and being genuinely concerned for an individual’s state of health.

Development of Learning Goals

My learning objectives are first, to be able to apply theoretical knowledge in clinical practice through the use critical thinking, and second, to be able to acquire proper skills and knowledge relevant for professional practice as guided by the ANMC competency standards.

In order for me to achieve these goals, it is important for me to be equipped with relevant knowledge that will help me in my clinical practice. This knowledge will guide me in critical thinking, especially when handling and caring for patients. Every patient is unique and they have different sets of needs. Thus, a nurse must be aware of every client situation. Assessment is vital in order to better manage the care given for the patients. Also, adequate clinical exposure and good mentoring are some of the things that I need in order to achieve my objectives. Mentoring is significant especially for a novice nurse like me so that I can receive proper guidance and support in my beginning practice as a professional nurse. In addition, I believe that clinical exposure will help me build confidence in the health care setting. With proper guidance, this will hone the nursing skills that I learned from the classroom.

In a few months, I will embark on my clinical placement. This is the best opportunity for me to apply all the knowledge and skills that I have learned in school. This is also the time for me to prove to conquer my fears, especially because the Australian health care system is different from my home country. However, I believe that the school will properly guide me through the process.

Reflection and Self-Assessment

My learning goals include expanding my knowledge and skills using theories and experiences that I gain both from school and clinical practice under the Australian health care setting. I, then, should get familiarized with the Australia health care system, and hopefully be able to apply these newly-acquired knowledge and skills in the area during my clinical placement. I expect to have a fruitful student placement and be able to work with different nurses and facilitators who would help me in achieving my objectives. It is important that the registered nurses would allow me to have a certain degree of independence so that I would know what to expect in the area when I start working as a nurse. By doing this, I would be able to hone my skills and test the knowledge that I had acquired, as well as to build my confidence and aid in my transition in dealing with different clients since the system here is different from what I was used to in the Philippines.

My Future Plans

I plan to gain as much experience in the hospital setting as possible given that I am novice to the profession. I would like to work in a ward that I would use a lot of skills and critical thinking like the Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Department or Dialysis Centres. I would also like to expand furhter my professional skills in Rural and Remote Nursing because I have learned that it is a type of advanced practice for nurses and because of my love for nature, outdoors and a calm lifestyle.
